Anne Hathaway revealed she had to kiss multiple actors during castings at the beginning of her career, which is something she said she is happy she doesn’t have to do anymore.
The actress, 41, recalled being asked to make out with actors, which she said was considered ‘normal’ around two decades ago, for chemistry tests.
In an interview with V magazine published on monday, she admitted she did not enjoy doing it but pretended to because she did not want to be labeled as ‘difficult.’
The Devil Wears Prada star — who modeled an edgy androgynous look for the magazine’s V148 Summer 2024 issue — recalled being asked why she wasn’t excited back then and said she thought it was ‘gross.’
‘Back in the 2000s — and this did happen to me — it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry,’ she explained before adding that was ‘the worst way to do it.’

‘I was told, “We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?”
‘And I thought, “Is there something wrong with me?” because I wasn’t excited,’ she said.
‘I thought it sounded gross,’ she added.
However, because she was in the early stages in her career and she was afraid of being labeled as ‘difficult,’ she said she decided to deal with it and pretend she was excitedaout it.
‘It wasn’t a power play,’ she said. ‘No one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very difficult time and now we know better.’
Now that she has more experience, she said she does not have to do that anymore and can better advocate for herself.
For her new movie The Idaof You, which she produced, she said she knew her co-star Nicholas Galitzine was the right person for the part immediately and especially after reading lines with him.
‘I remember laughing when Nick walked in because he was so ridiculously perfect for the part,’ she recalled. ‘I just thought, “He is it.”‘

Last month, Hathaway addressed rumors that her on-screen love interest is based on One Direction alum Harry Styles and her character is based on his real-life ex Olivia Wilde.
‘Everyone needs to chill,’ she told E! News as she shut down the speculation. ‘Sorry, I rpobably shouldn’t be that reactive about it. I just think no.’
